2024/2025 LOOK BACK PT. 1: FAREWELL FROM THE EXECS

Robert Frost’s poignant poem Nothing Gold Can Stay is a stark reminder that all good things come to an end, that neither good nor bad days can last, and that we should embrace the transient nature of all things in life.

Every spring, we say goodbye to one executive group, and welcome a new one. Over the past 12 months, our executive team came together on a shared vision for a brighter future for Ontario Tech students, and worked to improve and enhance our community’s post-secondary experience.

As we say goodbye to our outgoing executives and wish them well in their future endeavours, we’d like to share with you their thoughts and perspectives on the preceding year.

PRESIDENT

Serving as President of the Ontario Tech Student Union has been an honour, and is a journey I’ll always cherish. This year, my main focus was on long-term impact and student representation. And looking back, it’s so rewarding to see the progress we’ve made.

I initiated our involvement with the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA), which will give Ontario Tech students a voice to advocate at the national level, initiated the launch of a custom apparel print shop, and introduced a new club levelling system for more equitable funding. Alongside our VP Student Life, we brought back Clubs Appreciation Night and gave out awards to celebrate the achievements of our amazing student groups.

In terms of student engagement, we successfully piloted the Campaign School initiative, which equipped students with knowledge and tools to run in the OTSU Elections, reinstated town halls to encourage open dialogue, and introduced presidential debates during the election process. I reviewed executive job descriptions for clarity and advocated for an ex officio seat on Academic Council. Additionally, I worked closely with the university on improving equity-centred policies for marginalized groups on campus.

Passing the torch is a bittersweet feeling, but I am proud of our advancements this year and am excited for what’s ahead.

Serving as your VP Student Life this year has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my time at Ontario Tech. From Glow Week to Pangea to launching the Wellness Nook at North campus, every moment has been dedicated to making student life vibrant, inclusive, and engaging. I’m incredibly proud of the support we’ve offered clubs and societies through clearer processes, stronger communication, and a focus on community building.

To every student who showed up, spoke up, or shared a conversation at an event, thank you! You reminded me why student leadership matters each and every day. I leave this role feeling inspired by your energy and hopeful for what’s next. Keep showing up for each other, keep building community, and most importantly, keep making this campus feel like home.

As my term as VP Student Affairs comes to an end, I want to take a moment to reflect on what an incredible year it has been.

First and foremost, congratulations to everyone graduating—you’ve worked so hard, and you should be incredibly proud of all that you’ve accomplished. And to those continuing their journey at Ontario Tech: thank you for showing resilience, determination, and strength throughout the year! No matter where you are in your academic path, I am so proud of each and every one of you.

This past year has been filled with unforgettable memories. From planning and attending events to engaging in important conversations and advocating on your behalf, every moment has been meaningful. The events were so much fun, and it was truly a joy getting to meet so many of you—hearing your stories, sharing laughs, and building connections is something I’ll carry with me long after this role.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who trusted me to represent you. Serving as your VP Student Affairs has been one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences of my life. It’s been an honour to advocate for you, work alongside such passionate individuals, and contribute to the amazing student community we’ve built together.

Ontario Tech is full of brilliant, compassionate, and inspiring students, and I have no doubt that all of you will continue to do incredible things.
